I’m all about small changes. Especially small changes that don’t make a noticeable difference to your taste, but make a difference to your waist. Not all recipes are created equal. Some recipes are super healthy, but taste like cardboard and some are so fattening that you can feel the fat in your mouth. It’s important to find a balance. Most importantly you want your food to taste good and be nutritious! This is easier than you think. Many times switching out one ingredient for a healthier ingredient results in a lower calorie dish or a dish with more nutrients. Either result is a nutrition win!
Try out these 5 healthy ingredient swaps.
- Instead of butter try applesauce.
- Instead of sour cream try non-fat greek yogurt.
- Instead of vegetable oil try pumpkin puree
- Instead of garlic salt try fresh garlic
- Instead of rice try quinoa or cauliflower rice
Most of these substitutes are a one to one exchange, meaning that if a recipe calls for 1 cup of butter use 1 cup of applesauce. For garlic salt, use 1 fresh minced garlic for every 1/2 tsp of garlic salt.
Remember to start small, I would recommend starting with only one swap per recipe. Later you can experiment with trying more swaps as you go. Give it a try and let me know your favorite ingredient swap!
