Did you find yourself unexpectedly working from home? You might be surprised to find that working from home brings unique challenges, especially when it comes to nutrition. With so much change and uncontrollable situations, your nutrition is something you CAN control. Here are a few tips to eat healthy while working from home.
“The pantry keeps calling to me.”
You are busy working, and then you remember you have a pantry full of yummy snacks calling your name. Once you think about it, it is all you can think about.
Solution
Set aside your snacks for the day the night before. Just like you did when you went to work. Then you have it planned out and ready for the next day. It takes away the decisions and the temptations to keep eating all day long. Need some inspiration for store bought snacks? Check out this blog post.
“I never stop working. I’m eating at my desk.”
I eat while I’m working.
Solution
When you no longer have co-workers to eat with, it can be tempting to just keep working while you eat. But it’s important to take breaks for two reasons. First, for your mental health. You will be more productive if you take a few minutes to rest your brain. Second, for your nutrition. When you work while you are eating, it is difficult to pay attention to your hunger cues. Before you know it, you’ve eaten a whole bag of chips. Take a break and be mindful when you eat. Plus it keeps your workstation cleaner.
“I sit all day long. I never leave my computer.”
Gone are the days when you leave your desk to go to a meeting, visit a co-worker down the hall, go to the break room, or climb the stairs to your office.
Solution.
You have to make moving a priority. You need to exercise 30-60 minutes a day. Find your favorite exercise and put it on your calendar. It’s non-negotiable. Your health depends on it. Here are some free (for now) home workouts. Here are some free sample workouts. (I don’t agree with beachbody’s nutrition products or diets, but I do love their convenient collection of workouts.) You should also not sit for more than 1 hour. Get up every hour and move. Even if it’s for 1-2 minutes – walk, run, jump, squat. Anything to move your body at least once every hour. Bonus – your co-workers won’t walk in on you and wonder what you are doing!
I know these are stressful times my friends, but I also know that you got this!! Adjust to your new routine and stay positive. These tips will help keep you healthy while working from home. Hopefully by swimsuit season we will be traveling again and ready to feel good about our body.
