Breakfast on the Go

December 10, 2019Today my baby turns 19 months old! It still amazes me how much he has grown and the independence that he is starting to demand! Anything that he is capable of doing himself, he wants to do. Things like sweeping the floor, pushing the stroller, folding laundry, wiping his own bottom (definitely to my dismay), and getting his own snacks. He can’t quite open the refrigerator himself yet. (Thankfully!) But this does not deter him from going to the refrigerator and asking for his snack. To keep him from demanding cheese all the time (the only snack I could understand what he was saying), I created a snack drawer for him.
He has his own little drawer in the refrigerator for his snacks. You could use a bowl if you don’t have a little drawer that would work. I put little containers of snacks for him that are already portioned, washed, and bite size. This does require a little bit of prep time, but it makes snack time easier. Since too many options are overwhelming for my little one, I usually grab two and let him decide which one he wants. That seems to work well for us right now.
Once he gets a little older, I will create a snack drawer in the pantry for him as well. Right now I just put everything in the refrigerator. Is it weird that I refrigerate cereal for my toddler? Maybe, but he doesn’t mind it, and it makes our life easier to have just one place for snacks!
Having a snack drawer can also help make it less tempting to grab bags of processed foods, because your snacks are already prepped and ready to go. This makes healthy ssnacks just as easy. Easy and healthy!
Have you tried having a snack drawer for your kids?
