Breakfast on the Go
December 10, 2019Division of Responsibility for Feeding Kids
December 10, 2019My kid is a VERY messy eater. It doesn’t matter what he is eating, it ends up all over his face, hair, and clothes. Oh, and of course the floor – I don’t know how I could have forgotten that one! I partly blame myself, because we try to encourage eating time to be fun. It is not really an issue for me until snack time is in public. Or even worse – in the car! Yikes! The only snacks that currently aren’t unimaginably messy are crackers. I’ve had a difficult time finding a cracker I felt was healthy enough to feed my child on a regular basis. I have run across some blogs that make their own goldfish and became intriqued. I don’t presonally know anyone who makes their own crackers. It seems daunting to me, but to my surprise the recipes that I found were really simple. I decided to try a recipe from a great blog 100 Days of Real Food.
You just need three ingredients: 1.5 cups of grated extra sharp cheese, 1 cup whole wheat flour, and 5 Tablespoons butter.
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Blend all three ingredients in a food processer, until it forms one big ball. Then you have two options. You can roll the dough into a log so you can make round crackers, or you can roll the dough flat (1/4 inch) and use cookie cutters to make shaped crackers. We thought the shaped crackers were more fun, so we made more of those.
My son had a fun time using the cookie cutters! Great way to get the kids involved in the kitchen! I bought my little cookie cutters at Hobby Lobby. They were actually in the clay molding section. If you want to buy some online, try the Mini Cookie Cutter Set from Amazon.
Put the cut dough on a cookie sheet and bake for 10-15 minutes. Mine took about 15 minutes. You know they are done when they become hard like crackers and are no longer soft.
Isn’t that super easy? And healthy! You don’t have to worry about preservatives, artificial flavors, or food colorings! Yay for healthy, yummy snacks! Enjoy!
