Pumpkin Pancakes
December 10, 2019Determining Childhood Obesity at Birth
December 10, 2019I know that Halloween definitely falls under the special occasions when most parents let their children indulge in a little more sugar than normal, as I think they should. As a dietitian, I have a REALLY difficult time passing out empty calories to children, especially those under five. Apparently I am not the only one. As I was looking for something to give away other than candy, I noticed a lot more healthy options than I have seen before. When healthy options are packaged in cute Halloween wrappers, kids are still very excited about their special Halloween treat! So for any of you out there trying to be a little bit healthier on Halloween, here are five healthier options than candy. (All of these can be purchased at Wal-mart.)
Cereal Bars. I saw a couple of brands that even put them in Halloween wrappers. Yes, it still has sugar, but it also has some vitamins and minerals as well.
Pretzels. A great healthy snack that companies are also putting in perfect size Halloween bags. Plus, no sugar!
Popcorn. A great low calorie snack that kids love. It is a choking hazard for little ones though. They sell these in individually wrapped fun packs with Halloween decorations on them.
Granola Bars. Also a great healthy snack with some nutritional benefits like fiber and usually low in sugar.
Stickers and Toys. Oriental Trading has really good prices for Halloween stickers and toys, but you can probably find some at other places as well. Watch out for small toys that are choking hazards to kids under 3.
Happy Healthier Halloween!!
