Pumpkin Pancakes
December 10, 2019Determining Childhood Obesity at Birth
December 10, 2019When my husband and I were living in Germany, every week when I went to the grocery store I would buy a new produce that we hadn’t tried before. It amazed me that there were so many fruits and veggies that I hadn’t tried. It was pretty common that the checker would ask me, “What is this?” My husband would often laugh and joke about the “mystery food” of the week. Sometimes I knew what the produce was but hadn’t tried it before, or it had been awhile since I tried it. But many times, I had no idea how to even cut it, much less cook it. You Tube became my friend. I was amazed at how useful the videos were. It was especially helpful in teaching me how to cut a mango.
From this juvenile “game” we discovered new foods that we loved, and new foods that we didn’t love so much. We definitely had a lot of fun experimenting and made plenty of memories along the way. Now that we are back in the States, there is not much produce that we haven’t tried. (At least that you find in your average grocery store.) But with all of the fall squashes out I found something new, a turban squash! Have you seen them before? They look really fun! I was just too excited to take it home and give it a try. I’m still looking into recipes, but I’ll share with you soon.
I know it is easy to get stuck in a rut at the grocery store. You buy the same things over and over because it is the easiest thing to do. Well it is time for a change! Get your kids involved. Let them pick out something in the produce aisle that they haven’t tried before. This can easily become a very educational “game” depending on how much time you want to put into it. Research where and how it grows along with how to cook it. This will get your kids more excited about it when it comes down to eating it. It won’t take long before your kids are excited to go to the produce section to pick out something new! So be adventurous and let me know if you discover anything tasty along the way!!
