May 11, 2020Starting a new diet? You’ve been there, done that. Which one? All of them! Except the cabbage diet, you didn’t try that one cause you don’t like cabbage. Did they work? Yeah, they worked for a little while, but then you stopped and gained the weight back.
Sound like you? It’s time to stop the same cycle. It’s time to take a different approach. Dietitians call the different approach a healthy lifestyle. Many new diet marketers have seen success with “healthy lifestyle” and have used the term for their new diet making it even harder to distinguish what truly is a healthy lifestyle. Let me help you out.
A healthy lifestyle is when you are consuming healthy foods 90% of the time and eating comfort foods 10% of the time. You willingly choose and want these healthy foods because they taste good and make you feel good. You also include exercise 5 days a week for at least 30 minutes. You do this because you love to exercise or you love the way it makes you feel afterwards. You do not think about food all day. You only think about it when you are hungry or when you are meal planning.
A healthy lifestyle looks very different for everyone. It’s not a one size fits all. The key to success is finding healthy foods that you enjoy, but understanding that there is not any food that is forbidden. (unless you have food allergies) The joy in eating healthy is what my nutrition coaching is all about. Yes, I’ll teach you how to pair foods and proper portion sizes, but when you start having more energy, feel good, and enjoy the foods you are eating that is when you discover the pure joy of a healthy lifestyle. This is what we strive for. This is the point that makes it worth it so you won’t go back to your old habits.
Let me tell you about Ashley (name changed for confidentiality). Before Ashley started working with me she was overly consumed with thoughts about food. She was always thinking about what she should eat, what she should NOT eat, WHEN she could eat. She thought about food 80-90% of her day. She had tried several diets before and was currently eliminating carbs and trying intermittent fasting. Ashley wanted to lose 15 pounds.
I worked with Ashley for 4 months. While I do not concentrate on weight loss, Ashley lost 16 pounds. But most importantly she discovered a healthy lifestyle. She now enjoys eating. She understands that food is fuel, and there are no good or bad foods, only foods that give you energy. She plans her meals ahead of time and doesn’t stress or overthink about food during the day. She eats when she is hungry. She is happy and has more energy than she has had in years!
